HOW YOU CAN HELP

The onslaught on the world’s rhinos started in 2008 when 83 rhinos were poached in South Africa after a small number of 13 in the previous year. These totals rapidly accelerated to reach a record high of 1215 rhinos slaughtered in 2014, the same year that I founded The Australian Rhino Project.

On the 3rd February 2020 the South African Government Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries reported that the official number of rhinos poached in 2019 was 594, the lowest total since 2011. While this is obviously good news, my personal view has always been that the official statistics could be understated by up to 20 per cent simply because where the rhinos roam, the authorities don’t find all the carcasses – the Kruger Park is a vast area, about the size of Israel or Wales and, it is also sparsely populated. Also, logically, there are less rhinos left and hence more difficult to find.
